Ever wanted to try acupuncture?

Nearly half of us just grin and bear it when we are in pain. Here is how acupuncture can help, and what to expect from your first session.

According to the British Acupuncture Council, nearly half of Brits (44%) just grin and bear it when they are in pain, which can affect their long-term health and wellbeing. Many people put up with pain they do not need to, when musculoskeletal discomfort can often be eased with the right diagnosis and treatment.

How acupuncture can help

Traditional acupuncture can help to:

  • reduce pain and swelling
  • increase blood flow to aid recovery
  • restore movement around an injury

Many people either ignore an injury or reach for painkillers and anti-inflammatories without having it examined. These can mask a problem without treating what is causing it. Acupuncture aims to get to the root of the problem and help you understand and manage your symptoms, for better results in the long term.

An ancient system of medicine

Acupuncture is one of the oldest documented systems of medicine, practised for around 2,000 years. It is based on the meridian system and the flow of energy through the body. When that flow is blocked or disrupted, pain or illness can follow. Stimulating specific points aims to regulate the flow, restore balance and support the body’s natural healing.

Worried about needles?

More than a fifth of people (21%) say they are too scared of needles to try acupuncture. It is completely normal to feel a little nervous before your first session. Your acupuncturist will explain the whole process, including how it will feel. The needles are single-use, sterile and very fine, and nothing like the hypodermic needles used for injections or blood tests.
